Singing with Seasonal Allergies
Sometimes singers are at the mercy of the natural elements. When it comes to seasonal allergies, we can all be affected to varying degrees. It is important to find the balance you need to maintain your vocal health. Many times seasonal allergies require taking some type of antihistamines in order to make sure a sniffle doesn’t turn into a full blown illness. However, antihistamines are very drying. It can leave our vocal folds dry, tender, and at risk for vocal injuries. So, it is always important to make sure that if you are indeed needing antihistamines, you maintain proper hydration. It is also okay to take extra precaution by avoiding other things that can cause dehydration or dryness. Perhaps it would be a good time to decrease caffeine and alcohol consumption. It is also wise to treat allergies like you would a minor cold. It would be best to take extra time for rest both physically and vocally. It may feel like admitting defeat or like you aren’t putting in the work you need. However, it is important to remember that rest can be productive as it can prevent furthering any issues. There are also plenty of ways to practice or study your music without over-working your voice.
