Singing Science Experiment

Singing Practice Science Experiment

A lot of being a singer is like being a musical scientist. When we go to practice, it is helpful to spend less time being critical of our singing and more time observing and taking notes. Scientists are all about collecting data and experimenting with new ideas. If we can take judgment out of the process, we can focus on trying new techniques and allow ourselves a bit more room for experimenting. While attempting something new or trying to build on something we’ve been working on, negative self-talk like “that was bad” or “I sound awful” won’t be very helpful in working through something. If we can instead focus on observing what we are feeling and how we can adapt to make a change, we will have an easier time getting to a better place. So for your next practice session, try thinking like a scientist! Experiment and observe what happens without negative self-talk and judgment. You may be surprised how this change in thought can have a big impact on your practice sessions.
