Opera Fool

Happy April Fool’s Day!

Many of my students hear me talk about my experience with performing. Most know that I studied and performed in opera. While I don’t expect my students to want to study classical singing like me, I do like to pass on some information about the art form. To many, opera seems stuffy and boring, something that belongs in the past. However, opera is often about a lot of relatable things. Also, not all operas are dramatic or serious. There are plenty of comedic operas or even Operas that have been written recently. What many do not realize, is opera singers rarely use microphones and only rely on their skill and training to create the sound needed to resonate through a large performance hall and over an orchestra. So I recommend giving a live opera a chance. Try experiencing hearing the bare voice powerful enough to soar through a theater without added amplification. It can be like magic. So give it a try sometime! And pretty soon you could be a fool for opera, too!
