Never too early to sing
One of the most common questions I get when someone wants to learn more about voice lessons is: “Is there an age requirement or limit to taking lessons?” And I always say, “NO!”
There are many vocal teachers who believe that in order to study the voice more in depth, the student needs to have gone through puberty or be old enough to focus during a lesson. I do not agree. I find that if a young kid is wanting to learn to sing enough that they are looking into voice lessons, that child is likely doing a lot of singing on their own already. So why not introduce basic concepts of healthy singing technique to them if they’re going to be singing anyway? Most young kids can understand some simple vocal techniques. It is just my job as the teacher to find a way to present them in an age appropriate way. Yes, the voice can change a great deal before and after puberty. However, no passionate singer is just going to take a couple years off singing while their body is changing. So why not keep learning healthy singing techniques as you go? The only thing I may adjust is the lesson length or frequency to best fit the student’s stamina and ability to stay focused during a lesson. This is why I believe in taking students of all ages. If they are passionate about singing enough to take voice lessons, then they are definitely able to take lessons. Singing has no age requirement!
